NGENIERO LIEVANA'S HOUSE IS DESTROYED
Mexican Architect Armando Lievana built this beautiful house in the 1950s in Colonia Narvarte. Now it is being demolished, as are many of the buildings in this Colonia. The house will be replaced by an apartment building with 18 apartments selling for a minimum of 3.5 million pesos each. Now that is serious money. The most worrying aspect of this is that it was a very solid structure. The walls showed no signs of cracking, or age. Mr. Lievana's creation could easily have survived a number of decades more. If houses of this quality are being destroyed, we can now see the kind of development money that is pouring into the colonia. Narvarte Poniente, which was recently upgraded to AAA status for amenities by the Mexico City Government, has seen many residents receive rent increases of 50% in the past three months. A recent change in the rental law eliminated a clause which restricted rent rises to a maximum of 10% per year. Now, in Narvarte Poniente it is what the market can bear. Which means pay more rent, or go move someplace else. This destruction of community and habitation literally knows no bounds. It is a win-win situation for the delegation, local government, property owners and developers who share in the destruction because they all profit very handsomely from the cement dust.
